Janine Glanz Paintings

My painting journey started when I was a child and was drawn to colouring books and paint by numbers.

I studied graphic design for a couple of years before pivoting in a completely different direction and qualifying as a chartered accountant.

Through the years of raising a family and working as an accountant, my passion for painting remained, although various constraints meant that I didn’t pursue it other than as a hobby.

When the world stopped for a moment during Covid, and with children grown up and independent I was able to fully embrace my passion to paint and for the last few years I’ve dedicated myself to learning, playing and discovering myself through my painting.

My paintings start as a thought, an idea, a feeling or a moment that captures me, each one is different with no formula. Some of my paintings have a straight line journey from blank canvas to finished painting, while others may have an entire painting underneath with areas from the underpainting forming part of the final painting. I’ve learned that letting go of preconceived ideas and being adaptable to changing situations, while difficult at times, is very important.

Many of my paintings evoke feelings of nostalgia, this is a combination of my getting older and sometimes struggling with the pace at which this new world moves and finding my dad’s old slides from the 1960s and 70s, which provides me with unlimited inspiration.

I’m based in Riebeek Kasteel, a beautiful village one hour from Cape Town, where I have my studio with adjoining gallery. I still work part time running the finance department of an NGO which I’m fortunate to do remotely.
